Every 2,000 hours in a learning program dedicated to on-the-job training equates to 12 months of hands-on experience.
You must obtain a Texas contractor's license to perform electrical, plumbing, or HVAC work contracted in the state of Texas. While general contractor licenses and specialized licenses may also be required, this differs from city to city. Texas does not require any specific test or license if you want to operate as a general contractor. But there is always a short answer and a long answer.
The long answer is that, while Texas requires nothing to operate as a general contractor, some cities within the state do.
